SYMPTOMS OF BIOFILM GROWTH

• Reduced of nonexistent disinfectant residuals
• Presence of slime substance in distribution system or consumer locations may show pink or black slime
• Musty or yeasty odors
• Increase in fluid frictional resistance. This is caused by biofilm constricting the piping. Due to their viscoelastic properties, biofilms can cause a greater pressure drop across a pipe than a carbonate scale of the same thickness; as illustrated below:
